I like fabric. I have a lot of fabric. Sometimes I hoard my fabric and don't make anything from it. In fact I have a lot of fabric I like which I sometimes hoard and don't make anything from. Part of the reason I dont use my fabric is I can't quite decide what to do with it, not enough ideas and sometimes too many ideas. So 2012 will be different. I am not going to make any resolutions about not buying fabric as that would just be silly and I may have already bought some this year already! But I am going to try and use some of the fabric I have and love. So each month or two I will be picking a different selection of fabric from my stash, asking for ideas and cutting it up and doing something with it. As a little thank you to all the lovely bloggers and followers out there I may even have some giveaways!

Those are 1 yard cuts, which is a lot of fabric that I couldn't decide what to do with. The husband (not usually known for his quilting wisdom) asked why I had never made a "proper patchwork quilt?" He means one made out of squares so I decided to stop procrastinating and cut this into squares with some squares made up of smaller squares. An instant gratification project and hopefully I will have gotten over my fear of cutting into it!
And then just yesterday Katy announced her Swoon-along quilt along using Swoon by Camille from Simplify. I couldn't resist so 18 fat quarters of this will be made into a Swoon quilt provided that I can master flying geece. It's going to be fun so join up!
There is still a lot of fabric left! Ironing and cutting this fabric took a long time so when I was doing it I decided to cut some layer cake and charm pack sized squares and some jelly roll strips ready for making quick projects. I know a few babies due this year and thought the colours in this would be perfect.
Wow! Generous giveaway Amanda! That Hushabye is beautiful! I have hoards of Sherbet Pips and Little Apples, also Heather Ross, Munki Munki. I keep trying to use them but with the Heather Ross particularly I just can't seem to bring myself to cut it :-)

ReplyDeleteI have also been hoarding Anna Maria - good folks, little folks, flannels, innocent crush and now Loulouthi. Never made anything with any of them because I love them so much and project must be absolutely perfect! I love your patchwork squares idea (well, your hub's idea) and cutting some strips and charm squares at the same time is a great idea. D xx

ReplyDeleteHeh, I didn't have much fabric until a pile of parcels arrived yesterday, but I had stocked up on fat quarters of the entire Tula Pink Prince Charming line, which I managed to get in the Black Friday sales, and a yard cut of each of the frogs. I have several ideas of what to do with it, but not braved cutting into it!

Not exactly hoarding as I have plans for my small collection of Denyse Schmidt fabrics ('Fairgrounds & Picnics', 'Sweetwater', 'Hope Valley' & a bit of 'Katie Jump Rope'), and my FQs of Ann Marie Horner's 'Innocent Crush'... but I have yet to cut into them!

I have the attitude that I have soo much fabic a bit more will feel at home with me xx I love scrap, and charm quilts (every square a different fabric), then use jelly roll strips as a border and binding...works for me!! Doesnt seem to be reducing my stash any...wonder why? xx

ReplyDeleteI'm determined to cut into my 'heirloom' - I'd decided to make a 'garden fence' quilt but now I really want to make a 'swoon'!!!
I've been collecting Christmas fabric (mainly, if not all, from Riley Blake) and I keep changing my mind about what type of quilt I want to make. Every time I think I've decided I see something else that sparks another idea or three! I'm also currently keeping three charm packs of Terrain under wraps to make an Archie Bob Square Pants quilt (pattern by the wonderful Lynne) and I think this could also be a good pattern for your fabrics...

ReplyDeleteI'm trying to go on a fabric diet this year as space is becoming an issue. I'm not worried about having a stash though, I've only been quilting for a couple of years so it isn't that old.

I've been hoarding some Far Far Away II since it was released. I've just cut into it to make a dresden plate but that doesn't use up much. I've also got an old Amy Butler Love jelly roll that has been waiting for ages for the perfect project. I generally hoard obsessively. I see fabrics and buy without knowing what to do with it! Bad but pretty habit.

ReplyDeleteI have some of that hushabye too that I haven't cut into yet! Oh, who am I kidding...I have a TON of fabric that I am hoarding and haven't cut into yet. But mainly b.c I'm just waiting for the right pattern or the right use of the quilt. I'm definitely going to make a postage stamp quilt with a coveted jellyroll that I've been hanging onto for years!

ReplyDeleteI have been hoarding the tinest bit of Hushabye that a lovely lady sent me as part of a swap, it was no more than a fq but this christmas I used it to make a pair of baby booties and matching soft elephant for a friends baby, it was almost painful but I know my friend loved them. I am still hoarding the scraps lol!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous fabric there. I am hoarding my Joel Dewberry at the moment - I too bought a lot of yard pieces - what was I thinking???! That is a serious amount of fabric, especially when I like to use quite a lot of white for backs.........

My craft resolution for this year was in fact to use up my stash first before getting anything new in. So I'm making a large quilt(aiming for a queen size) with tiny squares (aiming for 2,5 inch squares) and I have the ambition to then go and quilt it bu hand. That should keep me busy this year!

ReplyDeleteI am a Guide leader and we all had special neckers for the Centenary in 2010. I bought 2 yards of the fabric and now I don't want to cut it as it will not be made again and I don't want to muck it up!
