Fabric for Christmas gifts

Another trip to Millie Moon today where I picked up this fabric, ribbon and buttons to make some fabric hearts for my sister for Christmas.  Now I really need to stop buying fabric and start making Christmas presents with it!

Christmas Presents

I am hoping to give lots of homemade presents this year and so far my list is:

1. Bag & fabric hearts (sister)
2. Bag (sister-in-law)
3. Chutneys and curds in Christmas bag (Granny)
4. Coasters, chutneys and curds in Christmas bag (Mum)
5. Doll blanket (neice)
6. Chutney in Christmas bag (best friend)

I had better stop blogging and start sewing . . . .

Craft Class

I went to a Christmas Craft Class tonight at my favourite fabric shop Millie Moon.  It's where I have booked to do a 6 week patchwork course which starts in January.  We made 2 projects, fabric bags and hearts.  I have got lots of ideas for Christmas presents now.  The bags were really easy to make and could be adapted to any size.  The hearts were a little trickier especially trying to get the ric rac to show around the edge.

I bought some lovely Christmas fabric to make some bags and hearts from - pictures tomorrow.

Pincushion

After getting tired of tipping my pins out of a jar (all over the floor) for the tenth time I finally had a go at making a pin cushion.  This one again comes from Quilting in No Time by Emma Hardy and uses some of the left over fabric from my first quilt and was really quick and easy to make.

Sunday's Sewing

Well today I basted and quilted my first quilt.  I used a 100% cotton white sheet for the back.  The quilting is a long way from perfect (hence no close up shots) and there is a lot of puckering in my opinion.  However I am hoping once it is bound and washed these won't be so noticable and overall I am really pleased with it for my first attempt.  I think I am going to get a brown and pink polka dot fabric to bind it in.

Quilting Books

One of the things I love about my new hobby is the excuse to buy new books about it.  The one at the back was my original purchase when I thought about taking up patchwork again and is really useful for all the basics. Sew Pretty Homestyle and Quilting in No Time have some wonderful ideas for projects and I have made a few things from it.  Material Obsession is full of wonderful quilts I want to make.  Its a book by 2 Australian ladies and their blog is inspiring too.  Kids' Quilts in a Weekend was my bargain purchase last weekend £12.99 reduced to £4.99 with ideas for lots of smaller quilts.

Ikea

I had never thought of Ikea as a place to buy fabrics until I visited with my friend last week.

These fabrics were all 3 metres for £6 each in the children's department.

They are all 100% cotton and I thought they would make good backings.  The hippo one is definitely my favourite.

Although for some reason the bottom one here with all the little people reminds me of the Wind in the Willows!

Sunday's Sewing

Well this is what my Amy Butler fabrics became. At the moment it is my favourite thing I've made (so far anyway!). I am really pleased with the way it turned out. The pattern is from the book "Quilting in No Time" by Emma Hardy. I think I am a little slower than whoever the book is aimed at though. The time estimate was 2 hours and I estimate this took me 6 hours! I did customise it a little by making the straps longer so they could go over my shoulder and by adding a pocket for my rather large mobile. I think something similar to this may be making an appearance as a Christmas present for several people soon.
