New Quilt Top finished

I have finally got one of my old UFO quilt tops finished.  I started working on this in September last year!  Am planning on making a pieced back this weekend and am trying to decide how to quilt it.  I can't do free motion on something like this yet so am thinking of diagonal lines but am open to suggestions.

Wild Thing Oddyssea Quilt

I also need to get working on what may be another mad dash to finish quilt.  My husband reminded me this morning that I promised to make him a "manly" quilt for his birthday from my Authentic strips leftover from this quilt (well not really leftover, more because I widely miscalculated fabric requirements).  I have 14 13.5 days until his birthday.  I am sadly required to be at my place of employment for 5 of those days (and for some strange reason they don't allow sewing machines)  and will also be away from my machine for another 5 of them.    Thankfully they are all cut into 2.5" strips already (refer to miscalculating fabric requirements point above) so I am thinking of a jelly roll race or strip quilt of some sort.  Any ideas gratefully received!

  1. Great quilt top - quilting in the ditch round the pinwheels would be nice (make them all stand out and it would be great on the back) but it'll involve a lot of turning and pushing through the machine so perhaps not the best option (unless you can find a route to take you from one side to the other). Hmmm...will have a think! There are some lovely jelly roll quilts around Moda Bake Shop has lots of patterns that you could try and I like this one but you'd need quite a lot of background fabric. Or how about a quilt-as-you-go strip quilt - if you didn't have enough Authentic strips you could add some other fabric/background fabric to the strips you have already. Good luck, you've got a busy couple of weeks ahead!

  2. Lovely quilt top. Not sure about the quilting. FMQ really would suit this one. Good luck with hubbies quilt. If you did something quite boxy with the strips that would keep it suitably manly, and easy to do. best of luck in your time frame!

  3. How good would it be to be allowed a "Bring your sewing machine to work day"! Love your quilt top. Hope you make the deadline for your hubbies quilt!

  4. That quilt looks fabulous! Love those color together. I think a simple strip quilt would be great for your husband's gift. Good luck!

  5. I'd look online to see what other people have done! Circles come to my mind to get those blocks spinning but how about something like what Susan did on her Pips pinwheels http://canadianabroad-susan.blogspot.com/2011/07/pips-pinwheels-done.html Not quite the same block but maybe you could adapt it?

  6. On a different note - I saw your chocolate cake comment on Little Island Quilting. I have a chocolate cupcake recipe on my blog that is sooooo easy for when you want almost instant gratification. Honestly, this recipe knocks together so fast and the cakes taste good even without icing so you don't have to wait. For a more work, more ingredients, more money option but true chocolate heaven then I would say my favourite is Nigella Lawson - her recipe in Nigella Bites is to die for. Hope this helps you in your quest!

  7. great quilt top - hey, this could be your husband's quilt - you could say you had him in mind all along.....just a thought....

as for quilting - i also think in the ditch would work really well - but it would be a lot of pushing and pulling - otherwise, straightish vertical lines would be easy to do and it's very effective

  8. Great quilt I am sorry I can't help you on the quilting, domestic machine quilting is beyond me. But I am sure whatever you do it will be lovely. Good luck on getting the hubbies done. I know I would go with something so simple and fast it would make your head spin. Yep throw all the strips in a bag and start pulling them out and sewing them together. Will be waiting patiently to see what you do.

  9. What a great top! I think maybe lines coming out of the block like a shooting star would be cool. From the middle and keep going... Make sense?

Anyway for an idea on your hubby quilt, hop to my blog. I just finished a jelly rool quilt and it went crazy fast.
